Once a pilot certificate has been earned, there are a number of ratings which may be added to enhance the privileges of the certificate. A rating grants a pilot an additional privilege beyond those that are provided by the certificate he or she holds. A private pilot certificate, for example, permits the holder to operate an aircraft in VFR (visual flight rules) conditions only. But if a private pilot wishes to be able to fly in IFR (instrument flight rules) conditions, acquiring an instrument rating will add that privilege to those already granted by the private certificate. Not every rating is available for every certificate. In the previous example, if the holder of a sport pilot or recreational certificate wished to acquire IFR privileges, it would be necessary to first upgrade to a private certificate, since an instrument rating may not be added to a sport pilot or recreational certificate. There is quite an array of ratings to choose from. No matter the type of flying a pilot may be interested in becoming involved with, there is a rating which will grant that privilege. We will examine the more popular ratings in some detail, and provide a listing of all the other ratings. |
