Controls the rolling or banking movement of an airplane.

 

The angle between the wing’s chord line and the relative (oncoming) wind.

 

The angle between the wing’s chord line and the longitudinal axis of the airplane.

 

The ratio between the length and width of a wing.

 

Automated Terminal Information Service. A recorded broadcast that provides weather and airport information for departing and arriving aircraft.

 

The curvature of an airfoil.

 

The imaginary line between the leading and trailing edges of a wing.

 

The upwards angle of a wing from the horizontal as measured from wing root to wing tip.

 

Distance Measuring Equipment. Provides the distance to a ground-based navigational aid.

 

Controls the nose-up / nose-down movement of an airplane.

 

Used during take-off and landing to increase the lift and the drag of a wing.

 

Instrument Flight Rules.

 

Instrument Landing System. Provides heading and rate of descent guidance for making a non-visual approach to a runway.

 

Instrument Meteorological Conditions.

 

A measurement of speed in terms of nautical miles per hour. One knot is one nautical mile per hour.

 

Light Sport Aircraft. Aircraft which conform to the rules governing the Light Sport Certificate.

 

6076 feet. The measure of distance used most frequently in aviation. To convert to statute mile, multiply nautical mile x 1.151.

 

Movement of an airplane about its lateral axis. Controlled primarily with the elevator.

 

Movement of an airplane about its longitudinal axis. Controlled primarily by the ailerons.

 

Controls the nose-left / nose-right movement of an airplane.
